In the United States, the mandatory reduction of mercury emission, contrary to the European Union, exist for many years. Thus it is reasonable to support the domestic industry and the power sector’s actions with the external experience. These expertise suggest the main rules that should be followed due to mercury capture. One of them is that technologies should cover three steps of mercury emission reduction: a) conversion of the metallic form of mercury (Hg0) into an oxidized form (Hg2+), b) improving the contact between ions and the sorbent as well as c) final capturing. Moreover, the faster Hg will be captured in the flue-gas treatment system, the more effective, non-invasive and simpler the process will be. Based on laboratory and industrial-scale experiments the hybrid technology for mercury capture was proposed. The concept includes the combination of SPC material and the carbon sorbent injection. The objective to optimize the investment and operating costs keeping the high efficiency was achieved. The present paper discuss the technological and economical characteristics of the hybrid technology and the co-benefits such as coal combustion co-products quality prevention, in particular the fly ash and gypsum, by reducing cross-media effects. Since the mercury emission is a complex phenomenon and the system of mercury emissions control should be custom-designed, the alternative combinations of technologies were proposed to meet the criteria of other power plants. Other considered options are, for example, the intensifying mercury oxidation via halides and re-emission prevention by precipitating agents.
